Getting started
What GitButler does differently, the three ways to use it, and where to go next.
Thanks for installing GitButler. It lets you work on several branches at once in one folder, from a desktop app, a CLI, or a terminal UI. This page takes about two minutes to read.
Open a repository you already have
GitButler needs no import step, config file, or account. Run but in any Git repository, or open the repository in the app:
While you work on one branch, the repository stays a normal Git checkout of that branch. Your editor, scripts, and other Git tools keep working.
Work on several branches at once
You can have several branches applied in one folder at the same time, so you don't switch branches or stash. When you commit, you choose the branch the changes go to:
Each branch pushes and gets its own pull request. Parallel branches explains how they share one folder.
When a task needs its own checkout, for example to run a second dev server or to try two approaches to the same problem, create a worktree:
but status shows your branches and worktrees together:
Use the app, the CLI, or the terminal UI
All three work on the same repository state, and you can switch between them at any time.
| Start it with | Use it for | |
|---|---|---|
| Desktop app | but gui, or open GitButler | Reviewing diffs and dragging changes between branches and commits |
| CLI | but | Quick commands, scripts, and coding agents |
| Terminal UI | but tui | A keyboard-first view of branches, commits, and diffs |
If your shell can't find but, install it from the app under Settings › General, or run curl -fsSL https://gitbutler.com/install.sh | sh.
Set up your coding agent
GitButler includes a skill that teaches coding agents to use but instead of raw Git commands. Run the setup wizard in a repository:
The wizard installs the skill for Claude Code, Codex, Cursor, GitHub Copilot, and other agents, and shows every file before it writes it. After that, each agent commits its work to its own branch, and you can run several agents in the same folder. See AI agents.
Undo any operation
GitButler records every commit, history edit, and update from the remote. If something goes wrong, run but undo, or open Operations history in the app.
